This keto coleslaw is the perfect side to any BBQ or family dinner! It’s beyond easy to prepare and only takes a couple minutes.
My mama has been making coleslaw to bring to every family get together for as long as I can remember.
It’s a totally simple recipe, but she does one special thing that takes it over the top and makes it SO GOOD. Everyone raves about it!
We use it to top pulled pork or serve on the side alongside any grilled meat.
My mama’s secret is all in her food processor. She buys a bag of coleslaw mix and then pulses it in the food processor to grind it down.
It looks super similar to KFC coleslaw – little chunks of cabbage instead of big shreds.
Of course, this healthy coleslaw doesn’t have any sugar. It really doesn’t need it and I don’t think you’ll miss it at all!
You can certainly sweeten it up with the sweetener of your choice if you like your coleslaw on the sweet side. Promise me you’ll try it without first and see what you think!
This low carb coleslaw recipe needs just a handful of ingredients.
For the slaw itself, you’ll just need a bag of shredded coleslaw mix. Easy!
Coleslaw dressing:
For the coleslaw dressing, you’re going to use mayonnaise, a little bit of prepared yellow mustard, some heavy cream, and a little seasoning.
You can use a little garlic salt and black pepper or you can use Nature’s Seasons blend. My mama always uses Nature’s Seasons, but it’s good with garlic salt and pepper if you don’t have that on hand.
Isn’t that coleslaw dressing so simple?
If you like sweet coleslaw: you can handle this one of two ways – add a tablespoon of the sweetener of your choice.
Alternately, and this is my preferred method, you can dice up a large tomato and it to the mix. If you’ve never had tomato in coleslaw, you should definitely give this a try. It adds a touch of sweetness and it’s seriously SO GOOD. Give it a try!!
This homemade coleslaw recipe is so delicious!
You’ll just stir together the coleslaw dressing and then pour it into your cabbage and stir it up.
As the mixture sits, the cabbage releases a bit of water and the mixture will be a bit wetter, but this seems to be the perfect amount of dressing – it’s good right away and it’s still good after it’s been chilling the fridge for a few days.
There’s just 3 grams of carbs per serving in this recipe. I think you’re going to love it!

I really liked it. Nice change from the coleslaw I have made.

Great recipe! Used it with beef brisket for sliders (fathead buns). Only change I made was addition of 1 tsp celery seed. This is going to be my new go-to slaw!
Karly Campbell says
I’m sure it was delicious with celery seed!

I made this tonight with a couple of changes. I used hot honey mustard, sour cream instead of heavy cream, added 1t apple cider vinegar and about a cup of halved grape tomatoes. It was great!
I didn’t add any sweetener – never have in any coleslaw I’ve made.
Moon says
I don’t understand the serving sizes What is one? One cup? One bite?
Thank you
Karly Campbell says
Hello! We didn’t measure the serving size by volume. The nutrition is based on 8 servings, so 1/8 of the dish would be a serving.
Moon says
Oh okay that makes sense. Since I didn’t add the heavy cream the only carb I had was the cabbage since I just used a big head of cabbage. So I took a cup as a serving with two carbs in it since that’s what a cup of cabbage has in it. This coleslaw was also absolutely amazing!! It’s my new favorite. I gave some to my friend who’s also on keto and he said it’s the best coleslaw he’s ever had!! Thank you so much for this recipe!!

This is a great recipe which I’ve made many times. The only addition I make is apple cider vinegar to taste, which gives it some tang. Thank you for sharing!
Katherine A. says
This was really, really good. I’ve never had coke slaw that wasn’t sweet, and wasn’t sure I would like it, it this is perfect. I used 1 whole head of cabbage because I had it in the fridge. Finely shredded it with a knife, and then doubled everything else. I did add a whole red onion finely sliced, but that was my only change. This will be my go-to recipe for coke slaw from now on. Amazing. Thanks for sharing!!
Karly Campbell says
So glad you enjoyed the recipe, Katherine! I’m sure it was great with the onion, too!

Your website is utterly unusable on mobile. i
It bounces around, loads slowly, clicking things brings up a different link, then pop up videos and ads. Terrible
Karly Campbell says
Oh no, I’m sorry to hear that. May I ask what browser you’re using? We haven’t experienced that on our end and there shouldn’t be any pop ups on mobile regardless.
Lionellw says
What’s in the coleslaw mix?? Sorry I live in England so not familiar with this.
Karly Campbell says
It’s green and red shredded cabbage and carrots. 🙂
sherry says
How much is one serving?
Karly Campbell says
Hi Sherry! The nutrition is based on 8 servings, but I didn’t measure by volume.
Leah says
Omg I found this recipe a few days ago & have already made it twice! I added a little chopped grape tomatoes and radishes. I used Miracle Whip instead of mayo and fresh chives. We even used it for slaw burgers. It’s the most amazing coleslaw I’ve ever had in my life!!
Karly Campbell says
So glad you enjoy it! I love slaw with tomatoes in it, great idea!
Jennings.Luther says
A long way, you can finish step by step, and then you can’t reach without a foot
Karly Campbell says
I’m sorry, I don’t understand your comment
Nancy says
I added a tablespoon of dried buttermilk powder and one of acv and a 1/2 tsp of pyrur (erthyritol/stevia blend) Made it very much like KFC’s.
Kim says
Just plain buttermilk powder or buttermilk ranch powder?
Dixie says
What if you don’t have heavy cream?
Karly Campbell says
You could try using your choice of milk, but the colelsaw will be more liquid-y.
Deanna says
So delicious! I’m completely ou of garlic powder and never even buy garlic salt, but I had celery salt and used that. It’s so good like that, I’ll probably just continue to use celery salt.
Philip Davenport says
I love this recipe! I add 1 tsp of celery seed and 1 packet of Stevia. Deli6! However, exactly how much is one serving? Half cup, 3/4 cup, whole cup?
Karly Campbell says
I didn’t measure it by volume. Just divided it out between 8 servings.
Thewellnessevolution says
This is awesome. We would totally make it again.
Karly Campbell says
So great to hear that!
Anna says
I meant to say food processor. Haha.
Karly Campbell says
I didn’t even notice the typo! Ha! 🙂
Keri says
I actually found this to be a little bland. I added some celery seed and ACV. I do live in New England, maybe I just have a specific taste for cole slaw. We do love your pulled pork and mustard bbq .
Karly Campbell says
Coleslaw can definitely be a personal thing…I know I hate the sweet ones myself. This is pretty easy to doctor up though! Glad you enjoyed the pork and mustard sauce. 🙂
Anna says
Hi! I cannot wait to make this coleslaw, but unfortunately I no longer have a good processor. What you recommend? Thank you!
Karly Campbell says
Hi Anna! You can just keep buy a bag of the alredy shredded coleslaw. The dressing will still be the same, the slaw just won’t be as finely chopped. If you want, you could chop by hand. 🙂
K Lyttle says
Made this with a hint of horseradish for that wee bite… is that just a Canadian thing?
Karly Campbell says
I’ve never had horseradish in coleslaw, but now I want to try it! I bet it’s amazing.
Rick says
I’m intrigued too; however, I imagine it would be similar to using Dijon mustard like many recipes do.
Annick Mizel says
As this is posted on a multinational site perhaps you can explain what you have in these bag mixes. Just as easy to cut so I will use my head. Red and white cabbage, onions, carrots(if you want), then the dressing as above. I also use 1/2 mayo and 1/2 yoghurt, mustard salt and pepper.
