If you’re at all active in any keto/low carb forums, belong to any Facebook groups (join mine – lots of fun recipes and support!), or browse low carb blogs with any regularity, you’ve probably seen the new keto craze: CHAFFLES!
They popped up overnight and became an instant success and now they’re showing up everywhere.
I’m not sure who created chaffles, but I can tell you that the success of this recipe is real. Keep on reading, because these are definitely NOT your average waffle and definitely NOT just for breakfast!
What is a chaffle?
A chaffle is a waffle made of cheese and eggs. <— Before you click away in horror and disgust, let me insist that THIS IS DELICIOUS and you really will have no idea that you’re eating cheesy eggs.
Many people add other ingredients (myself included!), but the most basic chaffle is eggs and cheese.
Even my kiddos happily eat these basic chaffles, so you know they’re good!
Do chaffles just taste like burnt eggs and cheese?
Oh my word, no.
I can not handle the smell of browning eggs. In fact, my husband isn’t allowed to cook eggs in our house because he inevitably lets them get brown and burny on the bottom and that smell makes me gag.
Chaffles made with egg and mozzarella cheese have a pretty neutral flavor, so long as you use a neutral cheese, such as mozzarella.
Top your chaffles with butter and sugar free syrup and they REALLY taste like a waffle. My family has been eating them happily. My daughter requested them for breakfast the other day.
What other types of chaffles can you make?
The possibilities here are endless, my friends.
Use an egg and cheddar cheese to make a cheddar flavored savory chaffle that can be used as a hamburger bun or for a BLT or in place of bread for a sandwich.
Add some cocoa powder to make brownie chaffles. (Recipe coming soon – subscribe to my emails so you don’t miss it!)
Add some pumpkin for pumpkin chaffles. (Recipe coming soon – subscribe to my emails so you don’t miss it!)
Garlic bread chaffles. Pizza chaffles. Big Mac Chaffle! Arby’s Roast Beef Sandwich Chaffle! <— That last one even has our homemade Arby’s sauce to go with it!
As you can see, we love using chaffles as a base for sandwiches, as a pizza crust, or for a sweet breakfast treat! So versatile.
Ingredients:
In their most basic form, a chaffle is just egg and shredded mozzarella cheese.
Many people, myself included, like to add in a bit of almond flour or coconut flour to bulk the chaffle up and give it a little more of a bread-like texture. Both work well!
I also often add a bit of baking powder to help it rise.
How do you make a chaffle?
Let’s make a basic chaffle together.
I’ve learned that finely shredded cheese is better than thicker shreds for my personal tastes, but you may not care either way. I just like the cheese to disappear and finely shredded does that best.
You whisk the egg, stir in the cheese, and place half the batter in a mini waffle maker for 2-3 minutes. Don’t open the waffle maker for at least 2 minutes. Repeat with the remaining batter.
These crisp up a bit like a normal waffle would as they set. Just let them sit for 1-2 minutes after removing from the waffle maker.
You can add coconut flour or almond flour to give it a more bread-like texture, if you like. 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of either is a good place to start and adjust to your preferences.

With a pat of butter and sugar-free syrup, of course!
I have two sugar-free syrups that I use and like.
My favorite is the Choc Zero Maple Syrup – no funky aftertaste and it’s thick and sticky like traditional syrup. Click above to shop!
I also really love the flavor of the Lakanto Maple Syrup, but it’s not quite as thick as the Choc Zero brand. Click above to shop!
What kind of waffle maker do you need?
You are going to want a mini waffle maker for this recipe.
I use the Dash Mini Waffle Maker.
Don’t worry – you can order from Amazon for CHEAP and I almost guarantee you won’t regret the purchase!
It heats quickly, cooks quickly, takes up barely any space, and it comes in a variety of cute colors. I have the aqua.
If you want to make more than 1 mini waffle at a time, check out this one:
If you plan to make chaffles for a family, this should work great! I haven’t tried it myself, but plan to order because my kids are obsessed with chaffles too.

Made Chaffles for the first time for breakfast. Made scrambled egg sandwiches. Added a slice of American cheese. They were wonderful!!! My hubby loved them too. Planning on making garlic bread tonight with spaghetti squash lasagna.
Glenn E. Boley says
I bought the Burgess Brothers 4-mini waffle maker because I thought making more at a time would be convenient. BEWARE: although it is a perfectly fine little waffle maker, the operative word here is LITTLE. These are 3″ waffles, not 4″ like the Dash. They are fine for breakfast, but unless you prefer “sliders” to burgers, you’re going to want the less convenient, but better-sized Dash unit for use as hamburger buns or sandwiches. I now have both. If I had to do it all over again, I would have saved the $40, and NOT bought the Burgess unit. Why doesn’t some enterprising company make a dual-channel 4″ unit? Sure, you can buy two Dashes for $20, but have two cords to plug in, and just a general inconvenience
Karly Campbell says
Thanks for sharing, Glenn! I wish they had a 4 piece dash too!
Rene says
Can these be frozen and popped in toaster or put in oven to reheat??
Karly Campbell says
Yes, they freeze and reheat great!
Mandy says
U can usually get pretty cheap small appliances at goodwills or thrift stores
Elizabeth says
Will this recipe work for pancakes (chancakes?)? Or only for chaffles?
Karly Campbell says
It works as pancakes too. ๐
Steve Warner says
Hate to be the sole dissenter, but these are not at all like a waffle. It looks like a waffle, but tastes like eggs and cheese.
Karly Campbell says
Hi Steve…totally agree that’s what they taste like plain, but did you try them with butter and syrup? I think that’s the key to the waffle flavor. ๐
Steve Warner says
So I now stand corrected! The basic Chaffle is amazing. LOL. I think my brain said “That looks like a waffle. It should taste like a waffle.” And it does not, which caused a short circuit in my head. However I’ve since made chaffles with cream cheese and coconut flour and they’re amazing. And today, I came back and made a mozzarella & egg chaffle, however I added 1 tsp of coconut flour to give a bit more base and flavor. I used that as a bun for a sliced chicken sandwich and it was amazing. So please forgive me! You were right all along. ๐
Karly Campbell says
Haha! So glad you gave them another try, Steve! ๐
Kimberly says
I enjoy cutting up small pieces of onion and green pepper. Then I add real bacon bits from Costco! Very tasty!
Dorothy says
What if you don’t have a mini waffle maker, is there a time adjustment for cooking?
Karly Campbell says
You’ll just want to cook them until they stop steaming…should still be around 3 minutes or so.
Coleen says
A Keto acquaintance told me about the Dash and the chaffles so I Googled and found your recipe. I’ve made these almost every day and love them! The Dash works perfectly, I don’t even need to spray it as I guess there’s enough fat in the cheese. Looking forward to your other varieties!
Karly Campbell says
So glad you enjoy these!
Diannah says
It’s amazing. Even the kids like them! I added coconut flour and Italian seasoning. I did use my waffle iron it makes a half waffle.
Diane says
Hmm, my first batch turned out great but now they keep on sticking to the waffle maker – any tips on why and how to stop this?
Karly Campbell says
If your waffle maker isn’t non-stick, you’ll want to spray with non-stick spray really well before each batch.
Heather says
I have just discovered Chaffles but can’t get a Dash Waffle maker in the UK! I managed to get a Von Sheff but I find it sticks a bit…any idea how to fix this?
Karly Campbell says
Hi Heather! I don’t know what Von Sheff is, but any waffle maker should work. You may just have to adjust the amount of eggs/cheese or not fill your waffle maker all the way full. Use non-stick spray if your waffles are sticking.
Diane says
Just saw your comment – mine is a Von Sheff and it is sticking too – so maybe the Von Sheff is not good for making chaffles?
Sue says
Mine is a Von Schiff and the chaffles donโt stick. I brushed the maker with melted butter after heating, then poured in the batter
Dana says
Can you use other cheeses? Or does it only work with mozzarella?
Karly Campbell says
It works with any cheese! Mozzarella seems to be the one that doesn’t leave behind any cheese flavor though, so if you want them for a breakfast waffle use the mozzarella. For a sandwich or something savory, any other cheese would be fine.
Carol says
I saw a video where a man was showing how to make a chaffle. He used egg whites and said it didn’t taste so “eggy”.. He also got colby jack cheese from the deli sliced paper thin… he used this whole slice instead of shredded. Has anyone else used cheese like this/
Coleen says
I accidentally used parmesan and it was not good!
Kathleen says
These really satisfy a waffle craving and are really great, fast and easy burger bun replacements! I have tried most of the keto-friendly syrups now and my favorite is a mix -1 part Lakanto maple syrup with 3 or 4 parts ChocZero syrup (I love the caramel or the pecan best!)
Thank you for the inspiration!
smoore says
I want to like this. I really do. But I cannot get unburned chaffles, no matter what iron I use.
Bought a couple of different Dash waffle irons. The chaffles were burned black on the outside and the inside was still loose. Hopeless. (So yeah, I have both a new in box and a used-twice Dash that I need to get rid of.)
Tried the fancy Belgian wafflemaker instead. It still burns on the outside before the inside is set. Cleaned the iron very well and tried again. Still burned.
Tried again with another waffle iron, an old, square Salton we had stashed somewhere. Burned.
At this point, I’ve given up.
Karly Campbell says
Hmm, that’s really strange. You’re using 1 large egg and 1/2 cup of finely shredded mozzarella?
Debi says
Three minutes in the dash waffle maker, golden brown, not burnt!
Sonja says
Yes…exactly. No burning in 3 minutes. Don’t know why she’s having such a terrible time!
Deborah Lodwich says
Just wonder if this user sprayed all the waffle plates before cooking? Also, if inside is still wet it sounds like the waffles are not left long enough. I cook mine for 7-8 minutes and let them sit in the iron for another minute after I unplug the power.
Pam says
Does the size of the waffle maker matter? I just bought one today and itโs standard size
Karly Campbell says
Hi Pam! You can really use any size waffle maker, but you probably won’t be able to fill a standard size waffle maker with the 1 batch of batter.
Kat says
But it still works just fine. I picked up an inexpensive standard waffle iron at Walmart and just made my first chaffle. It was great and I basically inhaled it, doing each section (standard waffle/4 triangles) with a different topping. Next time, I’ll double the recipe and have enough to make a proper sandwich.
Wanda Whitewater says
I went to 3 Targets before I found one. And it was the last one they had. And I paid $9.99 plus tax.
Suzan says
I am allergic to egg yolk. Do you think I could make these with egg white?
Karly Campbell says
I think so, but I haven’t tested it myself to say for sure. ๐
Tiffany says
Yes! I made mine with just egg whites and still turned out great!
Sharon Stark says
Hi, did you still use one egg white?
Rob says
If you are allergic to egg yolks try duck eggs. Many people who have allergies to chicken eggs have no problem with duck eggs apparently. Duck eggs are amazing too.
Kathy says
Yes! I can’t eat chicken eggs, but can eat duck eggs. Found a duck egg farmer by asking at farmers co-op and 4-H groups.
Kristine Vicari says
I am only putting half in the waffle maker and itโs still pouring all out of the sides??? Help
Karly Campbell says
Hi Kristine! Are you using the Dash mini waffle maker or something else? The Dash should fit half the batter perfectly. Either way, just reduce the amount you’re adding.
Kathleen says
I use large or extra-large eggs and it makes 3. If I measure, it comes out to about 1 and a scant tablespoon and seems to work without overflowing. I also put a sprinkle of the shredded cheese on the waffle maker and then a little sprinkle on top before closing the lid -makes it extra crispy!
Natalie Byars says
They sound great. But I don’t know what Amazon you are looking at but mine is selling it for $25, not $10! I don’t know if the company increased the price due to increased demand but that is a big price change.
Karly Campbell says
Oh wow…they must have increased price based on demand. How annoying!
Joan M. Simmons says
Try Target online and in the store. I would check online first because it sells out quickly. Same brand, $9.99.
Sandy says
I found out the same thing. I ordered mine at Kohl’s less than $10 with the 30% off coupon..
Sara says
I bought mine at Target for $9.99 last week.
Deb says
Bed Bath and Beyond had them for $9.99
EmayPA says
BB&B had a mini dash waffle maker (pumpkin shaped – so cute) on clearance for $5. $4 with the ubiquitous coupon. Bought 2 on Saturday.
Brad says
I just received mine yesterday from Amazon. It was only 11 or 12 dollars.
Brad says
I got the Dash Mini Waffle Maker.
Vivian Soto says
Target has for $10, 5% off and free shipping with Red Card
STACEY HAYES says
Hey. Brad I just got one for a cool 9.99 from target check it out hope this helps
Janice A Duerr says
I did get my Dash chaffle maker from Amazon for $10 in red. I know other colors cost more. I think they were out of stock for a little while because it took a couple of weeks to arrive even with Prime. I love it.
Myah says
Get waffle iron from target. Same price!!
Luanne says
Purchased mine at Meijer for $9.99.
RD Davis says
I dont have a waffle iron, wonder how a peninni press would work?
Kat says
The Amazon price is color dependent. Right now they have aqua or red for $9.99 but other colors are higher, up to $30 for the grey.
Karly Campbell says
Wow! $30 for gray…and the aqua is cutest anyway. Hahah! ๐
Sonja says
Already had one, but bought a 2nd one today on Amazon: $9.99 less a $2.00 coupon, $7.99….score!
Dr. Glenn E. Boley says
Youโre looking at the regular size waffle maker. The mini waffle maker is still $10. on Amazon.
Kerry Norr says
got mine at target for $10
Shirley VanDyke says
try different colors. Different prices for metallic.
